Times Union // June 4, 2021
Thanks to the Nourish New York Farm to Food Bank program Dutchess Outreach has distributed more than 26,000 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables through our food pantry to date.
“Sarah A. Salem of Dutchess Outreach, the county’s largest food access organization that has operated for nearly 50 years, called the bill’s passage “transformational” for food banks and farmers across the region.
“As health disparities and food insecurity persists and worsens in our community, the need to increase access to healthier foods has never been greater,” said Salem. “Thanks to Nourish New York we have been able to do that on the frontlines in Dutchess County.”

Taking on the Challenges of Poverty Dutchess Outreach Makes an Impact
Livelihood Magazine, Hudson Valley Pollinators // Published Thursday, May 3, 2018
“To ensure the effectiveness of Dutchess Outreach as it moves into the future, the nonprofit is doing its best to communicate with similar, nearby organizations to find solutions to shared problems. “One of the things we have started to do more of is think about why our clients are in the situation they are in and examine the factors that exist in our community which contribute to the need for services,” says Salem. “There is deep-seated poverty that exists in small urban communities such as in the city of Newburgh, parts of the city of Kingston, and even in the city of Beacon. We want to help create solutions that can be replicated and shared by working with all of our community partners. There has been some good work done over the years, so we’re trying to capitalize on that and push it forward.”

“What makes a community a more desirable place to live, work, and play? Communities are complex structures. Diverse systems of people, organizations, ideas, and behaviors that are always moving, breathing, pulsing, and hopefully, evolving to better suit the needs of those who reside within them. In order to thrive, communities need fuel; a well-functioning economy, good jobs, upstanding community leaders and politicians, strong systems of public transportation, infrastructure, education, human services, space to play, and, most of all, consistent access to quality food. A well-fed quality life…”
