Congress is considering many pieces of legislation that would make food healthier, safer, more affordable and better for you and the environment.

Food Assistance and Food Access

H.R. 609 Food Donation Act of 2017

This bill would expand food donation under the Child Nutrition Act of 1966 to extend liability protections to food donated directly to the hungry, and to allow the donation of foods that are labeled in ways that do not affect safety (“sell by” dates, for example).

H.R. 1189 Anti-hunger Empowerment Act of 2017

This bill would reduce administrative requirements in the SNAP application process, authorizes funding to increase access to SNAP offices, and establishes grants for local charitable feeding organizations.

Child Nutrition

H.R. 203 Summer Meals Act of 2017

This bill would expand the summer meal program by increasing the areas in which it operates, reimbursing institutions that serve meals and snacks outside of school hours (after school, weekends, and holidays), and establishing competitive USDA grants to increase participation in the program.
